It's Easy Being Green
CONSERVE

Conservation means more than simply turning off the lights when you leave a room. Depending on your lifestyle there may be ways that you can dramatically reduce your footprint with no perceived change to how you live. Starting at home is the best - it might shock you to know how much power you use, yet you haven't turned anything on.

The best way to calculate how much energy your house is consuming from  phantom load is to buy a kill-a-watt meter which costs about $19.99 at a big box store and is simple to use - just plug it in and then plug in your appliance and it will tell you how much power you are consuming. It can also be really handy when purchasing appliances as you can get an exact idea of how much power they consume.

Don't worry about amps, watts or volts, just remember that the lower the number, the less power the appliance consumes and that when the appliance is 'off' it should draw zero. Even if something only draws 20 watts, if you have 5 items like it in your house that's 100 watts per hour, or 2.4kw/h which is a lot of power if you multiply that number by the number of houses in your neighbourhood.

  • Interesting Fact
  • Did you know that lighting accounts for 30% of your electrical bill, on average?
  • Tips for Conserving at Home:
  • Use power bars for electronics like stereos, tvs and satellite and cable receivers. Not only will they be protected from power surges, but you can turn them completely off when you're not using them and conserve money and energy
  • Use fans instead of air conditioning during warm summer days and nights. If you do use your a/c keep the thermostat no lower than 24℃
  • Install dimmer switches on incandescent lights (especially Halogens). You'll save a lot of electricity and your light bulbs will last longer
  • Buy a bike trailer and use it for grocery shopping or other errands around town. The parking is a lot cheaper, you get fit and you save money and the environment
  • And of course recycle and compost if you don't already - you'll be amazed how much less garbage you'll put out each week
