  • Design Lab Commitment
  • HOW DL LIVES GREEN
  • Here are some of the ways that Design Lab lives green:
  • Solar panels power all of our computers and servers
  • Our building has been reinsulated and has new  low-e windows
  • Our windows open so we let the fresh air in and the hot air out on most days. In the winter, most of our windows are south facing so we keep the blinds open to let the warmth of the sunlight give our furnace a break
  • We use our lights as little as possible (lighting typically consumes about 30% of your total electrical usage)
  • We specifically bought our appliances, toilets, faucets and most items in our office because they have low energy consumption
  • We have a programmable thermostat that adjusts the temperature after hours and on weekends to save on heating and cooling
  • 90% of our staff walk, bike or take transit to work and live in the area near our office
  • We support local farmers by buying food at the St. Lawrence Market
  • We recycle just about everything (and hope that it doesn't go to land fill - where does it REALLY go...)
  • We compost
  • We keep our neighbourhood clean by picking up the garbage around our building
  • DL Future Plans
  • Our commitment to being green has a long way to go. Here are a few more plans we have in the works:
    • Add more solar power!
    • Install a green roof
    • Landscape our boulevard
    • Install LED lighting
    • Expand this site with more and more tips!
  • Tips for Being Green at Work:
  • Leave your car at home - ride your bike, walk or take transit
  • Turn off what you don't use, especially at night
  • Print only what you need, and 'internally' recycle paper by printing on both sides before externally recycling it
  • Start a recycling and composting program if your work doesn't already have one
  • Turn off unnecessary lights and open the blinds to let natural light in - rearrange the position of your desk so the sun can shine in without bothering you
  • Encourage your colleagues by setting up a monthly green award for the person who displays real environmental leadership
